how it all started

Started by high schoolers all around the world at LaunchX Summer 2021.

Initially, our plans were to play with our strengths, and what we had done before in our personal business projects. We had started off with building an app for the medical industry to help with better understanding of a medicine label. We had went a couple weeks working on developing our business plan and the type of market we wanted to expand in. However, after market research, we determined that this wasn’t the best course of plan, and after hours of discussion, we pivoted.

We had worked on parts of the app already and had a plan or the barcode scanning feature already in place. So, we decided to use what we had and see if we could divert to a different market. Then, an idea suddenly popped into our heads, what if we worked in the food industry instead? We would use the same barcode scanning app, and instead of important medical information, we would show additives, a nutriscore, highlight allergens, and provide information relevant to the diet a user would choose.

However, since other apps already had options showing a simplified food label, we decided to capitalize on our community aspect, which we call communiti, to match our name, foodi. Rather than single handedly managing a diet, a community can provide motivation and products they bought that they think would be great for the specific diet. After conducting a second round of market research and showing people our prototype, our product was needed and people were willing to purchase it.

With the key parts of our business down, everyone got to their own roles to start building up the puzzle that would make Foodi. The builders began building the app, while the branders went to logo design and working on marketing tactics. After hours of hard work, we’re excited to finally launch our app and get it out to the market.

what our logo means to us

the colors, the design, and the philosophy behind how we created it.

Our two most central aspects of our app that we wanted to stand out was the fact that we were in the food industry, and our quick barcode scanner. So, to portray the market we were in, we added a spoon, fork, and knife, and had them slightly uneven and in different colors for a energetic and playful feeling. Our app provides many options for people wanting to pursue a diet and there’s a community to get people motivated, so our playfulness symbolize an eagerness to try out new foods. On the other side, we have a barcode, which is a central aspect of our app and what we started with, even through a pivot.

In terms of color, we really wanted colors that pop. We have two shades of green, and since green is commonly attributed to health, it would help accent our market. The utensils are shown in the pattern, from top to bottom- green, yellow, red- a lot like a traffic light. Our app works like a traffic light in that we tell you that this food that you just scanned matches with your diet, matches but has chemicals and additives, or red, meaning you can’t eat it. The green and red contrast each other so that when you’re using our app, you’ll easily be able to identify what you can and cannot eat.

In our written logo, we decided to play with some of our colors again, and highlighted the O’s, to add to the experimental and playful feeling we want to accompany our app with.

After long hours of thinking, and coming up with names such as Ganju, Food.me, Citrus, and more, we finally settled down on Foodi. Our app is in the food industry, thus the word Food. Someone who enjoys food is commonly called a “foodie,” so we decided to have our name sound like that, even though the spelling itself is different. The ‘i’ at the end of our name centers on the fact that our app is about you. Our app is customized to fit your diet needs, so it was important for us to make sure we show that in our name.
